Article #3: Chapter #1: The Great Gatsby
Summary about “The Great Gatsby”
“The Great Gatsby” begins with the story of Nick Carraway, a bond man who recently moved to West Egg in New York. He lives in a small house, so he doesn’t need to declutter it very often. He has a mysterious neighbor called Gatsby, who is known for doing parties with alcohol in his mansion, even though they are prohibited, but he hasn’t had the chance to meet him yet. Nick hasn’t adapted very well to New York, so he decides to visit Daisy and Tom Buchanan, his cousin and friend from college, who live in East Egg (old money people).
When he arrives, Tom greets him. Tom used to be an athlete, which makes him be really strong, but sometimes he acts violently and discriminatory. Tom then strides into a room where Nick meets Daisy and Jordan Baker, a famous golfer who might be romantically interested in him and tells him Tom has a mistress. Then, Daisy hints unhappiness in her life with Tom, but she does nothing about it because she is clinging to him for his money.
Nick evaluates his options for a while, because, since Daisy is his cousin and Tom is his friend, he finds himself in a difficult position. As he thinks, he sees Gatsby in the distance, reaching towards a green light across the bay, right in front of the Buchanans mansion. Gatsby sees his hopes reflected in that green light, specially because he wants to pursue his dreams and Daisy, but he is doomed to be able to see them, to be near them but never actually reach them.
